Here are some instructions to help you get started. Click the "X" above on the top right to close this window at any time.

This web map will allow you to step back into the history of the city of Strasbourg, France. You will explore a beautiful plan map of the city and citadel of Strasbourg, published in 1800.

Please Note: If you are using a mobile phone, it is best to view this page in landscape mode to fully view the map toolbar and for better overall viewing of the map and this welcome page. Also, it is recommended that you try this map on a tablet or laptop for better performance and visualization, as the map toolbar provides dynamic zoom and animation for exploring the historic map.

Here are the tools you can use to explore the map:

  • Pan and Zoom -- This works like other online web maps. If you are on a mobile device, use touch and drag to pan and pinch to zoom in and out. If using a mouse with a laptop, use your scroll wheel to zoom in and out, and pan around with click and drag.
  • Identify features -- Click on the blue and purple points to identify features on the map. When you click on the feature, it will turn green and a "pop up" will appear with information. You can click on any blue or purple feature to learn about the location:

    • Blue features -- There are over 60 features identified using the map's original legend, the information includes an English translation.
    • Purple features -- There is a set of seven story scene locations from the first chapters of the historical novel, Guardians of The Crossroads, set in Strasbourg in 1804.

Using the tools of the Map Toolbar:

On the top left of the page is your map toolbar with a red and white background. Red and white are the colors of the flag of Alsace, and the city of Strasbourg is the capital of the historic Alsace region.

Here are descriptions of each of the tools:
  • Title bar button -- Click to expand or collapse the toolbar when exploring the map.
  • Help button -- Click to open this welcome / help window for reference if you need it.
  • Explore historic map locations -- Click to choose from several map feature selection options. The identified features will be selected in green, briefly highlighted and the map will zoom to the extent of the selected features. You can then pan and zoom and explore the map and identify other features.
  • Citadel -- Click to zoom to Strasbourg's Citadel Park and use the map tools below to compare the locations of the old bastions which still remain displayed today.
  • Scenes -- Click to zoom to scene locations from the story, Guardians of The Crossroads. Click through the seven scenes.
  • Home -- Click to zoom out to the full extent of the historic map.
  • Swipe Tool -- Use the swipe tool to adjust the edge of the historic map. The tool allows you to swipe away the historic map to view the present day base map. Its helpful when you are zoomed in close to a single feature like the Citadel Park.
  • Adjust Map Opacity -- Adjust the historic map opacity and see through to the base map. Like the swipe tool, it's helpful to use when zoomed in close on a feature.
  • Visibility on/off -- Use the checkbox to turn the historic map on and off as needed when exploring.

At the bottom of the toolbar are three information buttons.

  • The Story -- Click to learn about the historical novel, Guardians of The Crossroads, which is set in December 1804 -- the very time which this historic map reveals.
  • Map Info -- Click to see the original historic map and learn more about Strasbourg and this web map.
  • Comments -- Click to send any comments, feedback or questions you may have.
